The key to living in God’s image is not simply being at peace with one’s self. It is living self sacrificially. This type of living is, by necessity, an ordered, disciplined and structured living. It is not structured according to selfish ambition but toward the reflective benevolence of God’s character. So often, our metric for success, while receiving God’s blessings, is to act entitled to the idea of selfish ambition. We have turned the volume and efficacy & immediacy of our own voices into a metric for Godly success. We falsely have brought in an American doctrine of “freedom of expression” from into our faith. Here we can see that any freedom which is not self-sacrificial not benevolent but instead is driven from selfish ambition is not only disruptive & toxic but it is tacitly ungodly. This is why Paul reminds Corinth that the character of God produces order from chaos. The gift is only a gift when viewed in this light. Christians shouldn’t focus on their own voice, but God’s.
