To many, sharing the gospel can be a chore. This is because the gospel is a heavy message with heavy consequences. It is dynamic and complex. If done thoroughly, it had multiple interweaving plot points and characters with multiple theological implications. This can be extremely overwhelming without a whiteboard, a seminary degree, and many hours. But, John elucidates that a proper point of gospel transmission is not worry but joy. Some stories inspire you to explore the world they’ve built further. God’s narrative is one such story. It is vast and fulfilling and its fandom is welcoming and inclusive. According to the beloved apostle, our hearts should swell at the thought of making another fan to share in God’s universe with, the same way that finding someone who likes your favorite movie creates friendships. It’s not meant to be a chore to share God’s message, but a point of privilege. If in our personal lives, we come from this perspective, we will surely be better witnesses.
