7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

For Christians, walking in the Light as Jesus is in the light is an immersive task. This is because of two factors. First Jesus is in the Light. This is, of course, in juxtaposition to being in darkness. Those who walk in the light are exposed and vulnerable to scrutiny and danger. They are revealed to anyone looking. This type of transparency is not cultural virtue in a “dog eat dog,” world. But it does open the door to a meaningful relationship because transparency can create an impasse for trust. Secondly, Jesus is the Light. It radiates out from him. This means that he is a consistent source for the Light to touch those around him. Wherever he goes, there it is. Because of his divine nature in the Trinity, Jesus also lives in us through his Spirit. Like him, our light is to never die and to be a source of light for others. It should be an inescapable aspect of our lives in the lives of others. For many Christians, these two things are not desirable. Christ specifically challenges this. We are warned to not hide our light, as so many do, but let it shine out to expose those things that may harm us, and to gather those who wish to God and others.
