20 But you are not like that, for the Holy One has given you his Spirit, but you have an anointing from the Holy One. and all of you know the truth.
1 John 2:20
The Spirit of the Anti-Christ is that which denies the gospel. It denies the basic message of Christ to love in the way God loved us. It denies essential things, such as his physical life and resurrection, in favor of a more ethereal version. The Spirit of Anti-Christ seeks to diminish the power and uniqueness of Christ and in doing so makes him easily accessible at the cost of true relationship with him. It confuses quantity over quality. According to John, this spirit is at the root of the lack of love within the church. Its presence was not only active in the first century but also had managed to infiltrate the fellowship. There were many in the church, even some who were leaders, that didn’t belong. Their mark was clear. They left the fellowship. But, perhaps starker is the reason. They did not have the Holy Spirit within them. The context is obvious. A different spirit was at work within them. For believers, this is not an earthly problem. It is a binary equation. Either you have the Holy Spirit at work within you, earmarked by your surety of God and a radical love for each other, or you have the Spirit of the Anti-Christ at work in your life. This may not be a popular truth, but it is a biblical one.
