“In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.”
2 Peter 1:5-9 NLT
Here Peter listed many quality’s of what Christians should be pursuing. Some are goodness, knowledge, brotherly kindness, and love. When Peter is saying love he’s speaking of agape love, the sacrificial and selfless concern for the good of others. Peter wants us to make an effort to pursue these traits and apply them and grow them in our journey as a believer. Again he’s addressing believers, men and women who are saved by faith in Christ and will spend eternity with God. Now with pursing these quality’s it won’t happen over night as Peter has mentioned in prior versus, but to make and choose to go towards growing these traits. The tragic loss of abandoning these qualities, living only for ourselves, is the loss of opportunity. It’s not a question of losing salvation, but of failing to become who we can be in the here and now. Peter is pressing on that we have choices as believers and we’re saved and we have God with us. It’s your choice to be either fruitful or to waste away a gift.
